The Pope is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, and is, according to Catholic teaching, God's representative on Earth. The list of popes begins with St. Peter, one of the original Apostles of Jesus Christ. Peter founded the Christian church in Rome in the days of the pagan Roman Empire.

266. Benedict XVI (2005-2013)-In February, 2013, the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict the XVI would resign his position as head of the Roman Catholic Church. This is the first Papal retirement, since 1415, and the resignation of Pope Gregory XII, whose forced resignation was a turning point in the end of the schism in the Church.
267. Francis I (2013)-In March, 2013, following the surprise retirement of Benedict XVI, the Conclave of Cardinals met and chose Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as the new Pope. Bergoglio chose as his Papal name, Francis. Pope Francis is the first Pope from the Americas, and the first Jesuit Pope.
