Tiger Woods and his wife, Swedish-born supermodel, Elin Nordregen
Tiger Woods, who is best known for dominating professional golf in the 1990s and into the 21st Century, is currently (2009) ranked first in hte 2009 PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoff Results, making him the top golfer in the world. Tiger Woods was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2008, earning an estimated $110 million from winnings and endorsements. He is the first professional athlete to earn $1 Billion in sports earnings and endorsement earnings combined. The Tiger Woods effect on professional golf cannot be understated. He is by far (at least until his marital issues came to light in late 2009), the most popular and best known golfer in the world. Millions of viewers and casual fans tune into televised PGA events to watch Tiger Woods, and his presence at a golf tournament is worth massive amounts of money to the PGA as well as to Tiger Woods' competitors on the PGA Tour.
In his amazing career, TigerWoods has thus far won fourteen professional major golf championships, which is the second highest total of any male player. He has won 71 total PGA Tour events, third all time. Woods has acquired more career major wins and career PGA Tour wins than any other active professional golfer. Woods is also the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, while being the youngest and the fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour.
Tiger Woods played at Stanford University for two years before turning pro. He married Swedish supermodel Elin Nordregren in 2004, and they have two children. In December, 2009, Tiger Woods admitted to commiting adultery by cheating on his wife. Multiple women came forward with claims of being Tiger Woods' girlfriends. On December 11, 2009, Tiger Woods posted the following statement on his website:Tiger Woods taking hiatus from golf--statement posted on Tiger Woods' Official Website on December 11, 2009"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.
I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.
After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.
Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."
After Tiger Woods returned from his sex scandal hiatus, he met with varying degrees of success in golf. For example, Tiger Woods' showing in the 2011 Dubai Desert Classic shows that he has not returned to his normal championship form.
Spain's Alvaro Quiros carded a hole-in-one on the way to an incredible victory in Golf's Dubai Desert Classic. Tiger Woods and a horde of other big-name contenders fell away in Sunday's final round of golf.
The 28-year-old Spaniard from Cadiz captured the most notable victory of his career with a four-under 68 which included a eagle-two at the second, a triple bogey seven on the eighth and tellingly an ace on the 11th.
His 11-under 277 total left him one shot clear of Dane Anders Hansen (70) and James Kingston of South Africa (68).
But Tiger Woods, who started the day in a seven-way tie for fourth, only one shot behind leaders Rory McIlroy and Thomas Aiken, slumped to a three-over 75.
The former world number one is still without a win in the 15 months since his return from a vicious Tiger Woods sex scandal and his bogeys at the second and third holes left him with a major challenge, which he failed to meet.
