Katie
Holmes Kate Noelle "Katie" Holmes
(born December 18, 1978) is an American
actress in the movie Ice Storm
(1997), the character of Joey Potter on
the television show Dawson's Creek
(1998-2000), and as Rachel Dawes in
the movie Batman
Begins (2005). She is
perhaps best known for her marriage to
Hollywood star Tom Cruise. Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio,
Katie Holmes got a taste for acting in
high school theater productions. She
sent an audition tape to the producers
of Dawson's Creek, trying for the part
of Josephine "Joey" Lynn Potter, a
tomboy who is best friends with Dawson.
She landed the role, and appeared on
Dawson's Creek from 1998-2003. After her turn on Dawson's Creek,
Katie Holmes' best known role came in
the hit movie, Batman Begins (2005),
when she co-starred with Christian
Bale, who played Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Holmes' character, Rachel Dawes, was
the childhood sweetheart of Bruce
Wayne. She grew up to become an
assistant district attorney in
crime-ridden Gotham City, and, in many
ways, served as the impetus for Bruce
Wayne to take up the cause of justice,
rather than merely seeking revenge for
the death of his parents. Though she
was not cast in the sequel, The Dark
Knight, Katie Holmes did provide the
voice of Rachel Dawes in the Batman
Begins video game. Katie Holmes is probably best known
to most members of the public for her
marriage to star actor Tom Cruise. Katie
