Gordon HirabayashiGordon Hirabayashi (April 23, 1918 – January 2, 2012) --Aged 93, American Socialogist and Civil Rights activist who challenged the legality of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War Two. He lost his case in the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Hirabayashi v. United States.

 

Bill Janklow (September 13, 1939 – January 12, 2012)-- Aged 72--American politician from South Dakota. Janklow served as the state Attorney General (1975–1979 , Governor of South Dakota (1979–1987, 1995–2003); and as Soiuth Dakota's U.S. Representative in Congress (2003–2004). Cause of Death: Brain Cancer

 

Sarah Burke

Sarah Burke (September 3, 1982 – January 19, 2012) --Aged 29-- Canadian freestyle skier, world champion (2005), Cause of Death: Cardiac arrest following a skiing accident on January 10, 2012.

 

Etta JamesEtta James (January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) --Aged 73--American Blues Singer

Cause of Death: Leukemia

 

Joe PaternoJoe Paterno ( December 21, 1926 – January 22, 2012) Aged 85-- Record-breaking American football coach at Penn State University.

Cause of Death: complications from lung cancer

 

February 2012 Deaths:

Whitney HoustonWhitney Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) Aged 48-- Record-breaking American singer and actress who was one of the most popular singers of the 1980s and 1990s.

Cause of Death: Unknown at this time
